In this era of constant chaos and suffering, one has to find out some way or the other to calm not only the body but the mind and soul as well. The well being of our physical state beings with the well being from within. We all need a little break to be able to deal with everyday stress and monotonous schedules. And so far, meditation has always been proven quite an effective way to deal with the outer weariness and release the burden. It calms our mind, body, and soul and refreshes us to be more productive and efficient. Also, it helps in improving concentration and boosts up memory power. However, there has always been one common confusion among everyone- for how long should one meditate?

The question regarding the duration of meditation has been very common to experts in this field. They claim it is because people are running short of time and want results in as little time as possible. However, it has to be understood that there is never enough time for anyone of us. And meditation is not an easy art. It requires stillness and we are not used to giving a break to our hyperactive minds.

The Duration Depends On The Expectations Of The Results

Before moving forward, it is important to know what are your expectations from the practice of meditation. One needs to be clear of the results they are hoping to achieve with the help of meditation. However, not to ignore it is quite evident that meditation is not easy. It takes a lot of patience and practice for one to finally sit still and involved in it. The results of meditating are not immediate as well. It takes time for you to start noticing the results and changes but it does make a difference. All you need is constant practice and absolute patience. Only then you will be able to fulfill the aims of meditation.

Starting With The Basics Of Meditation Timings

Initially, it is not possible for anyone to sit still and calm for hours. Therefore, it is advisable that you start from somewhere 5-10min or even less. Try to move gradually rather than making it a compulsion or burden on your mind. Start with a minute and when you feel confident that you are able to sit still for a minute, then move to two minutes and so on. The results can’t be seen overnight. It happens gradually.

The most important thing to understand here is, it is not the duration that matters. First, it is important to start. Then try to be consistent and stick to your duration and gradually increase your capacity. After all, even a minute of meditation is better than no meditation at all. So the most important thing is to first start meditating. Once you start, make sure you are consistent in it. So choose a time that works best for you without making it a compulsion for you. Your aim should be to enjoy the process than chasing after the results.

We all are different individuals. There is no fixed time for meditation. Neither is there any logic that the more you sit to meditate, the more easily you will get results. What matters is even if you meditate for just 5 minutes a day, make sure it is done with total concentration ad conviction. Meditation is just like an art. The more you invest time and energy in it, the better results you will be able to yield.

Thus, instead of the duration, focus on meditating with the purpose of doing it right and whole-heartedly. The results will follow automatically!
